Book Review: Jessica Strawser’s ‘Not That I Could Tell’

The Big Little Lies of 2018.

This page-turner revolves around the disappearance of a divorcing wife (picture Nicole Kidman in the role) and her twin preschoolers, and peers into their neighbors’ conflicted lives and relationships.

The story is told from the alternate viewpoints of happily married, SAHM Clara (picture Reese Witherspoon in the role), and lonely, single, working girl Izzy (the new kid on the literal block that includes a lesbian Zen couple; a twelve-year-old, self-starting cub reporter; and the good doctor who reoccupies his missing wife and kids’ home). Sprinkled in are vignettes from the missing Celeste Kristin.

The detectives investigate, and the characters contemplate while dealing with their own drama — some consequential, some old and unresolved. There’s an element of suspense, and a surprising reveal at the end.

A cross-genre read for sure, but one that I believe will be most enjoyed by devotees of women’s fiction.

Perfect for mommy book clubs.
